Agricultural Solar Grants – Supporting Farmers Across Cumbria & Lancashire
Looking to reduce energy bills and improve your farm’s energy resilience? The Improving Farm Productivity (IFP) Grant from Defra offers an excellent opportunity to part-fund solar panel systems for farms - and GlowSolar is here to help you every step of the way.
What is the IFP Grant?
This government-backed scheme supports the installation of solar PV panels and battery storage on farm building rooftops or irrigation reservoirs. It’s part of Defra’s mission to help farms become more energy efficient, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and maximise on-site power use.
What the Grant Can Cover (Up to 25% of Capital Costs):
Rooftop solar PV systems
Battery storage units
Inverters, meters & diverters
Grid connection upgrades
Internal electrical alterations
Installation and commissioning
Charging points and energy management systems
Note: Ground-mounted systems are not eligible under this scheme.
How Much Funding Is Available?
Grants range from £15,000 to £100,000, covering up to 25% of eligible project costs. That’s roughly £60,000 worth of system value at the minimum threshold — ideal for a mid-sized farm with battery storage.
Farmers must fund the remaining cost via loans, savings, or finance (excluding other public funding sources).
How to Apply
Applications go through the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) in a two-stage process:
Online eligibility checker – to see if your project fits the criteria.
Full application – invited if your project passes stage one.
The scheme is competitive, with priority given to energy-saving projects with battery storage, especially on smaller farms.
